I had a completely different experience in my kayak with some otters. I guess I had gotten too close to their den or whatever. The entire family surrounded my kayak and would pop us out of the water hissing at me. It was like that whack a mole game… They chased me clear across the lake hissing at me until I got to the boat ramp where I had launched from. It was crazy. Never in my life has I experienced something like that. It was pretty frightening. Had to check my “man card” after that. I look back and laugh about it now but during the whole ordeal I must admit I was pretty scared. Too funny. Thought I was going to have to fight them off of me with my paddle. Smh
For those who don’t think this is a baby, adult sea otters are about four feet long and weigh 50 (female) to 70+ (male) pounds. They are MUCH bigger that the river otter you’re picturing!
The comparison I’ve heard used is they are more like a German Shepherd (with shorter legs, ofc) than a Dachshund.
(Based on the flattened tail and small ears, this is a sea otter. So it’s likely a baby, or at least juvenile, to fit on that boat.)
I’m glad the kayaker did the right thing and refrained from touching the otter.
Did anyone else wonder if he was hurt? He didn’t move that left arm at all, and animals don’t usually approach humans whimpering. I know next to nothing about otters (except that they’re ott-dorable) , but if someone with otter knowledge could clarify I’d appreciate it.

As a kid who lived near Hershey park and zoo America, we’d always used to go there. One time my class went on a field trip there and I saw an otter. I don’t know why or how they are just so darn cute.
