  1. That’s lovely! Grandparents are the best!

One of my favorite memories from my childhood occurred time and again whenever we would leave my grandparent’s house with my parents after visiting them for an afternoon/evening/whatever.

We’d all be in the car, ready to drive off, and that’s when my younger sisters and I would start “shooting” my grandpa with our finger guns, and he’d stand out in his yard, pretending to be riddled with bullets, writhing in pain, before eventually succumbing to his wounds and flopping on the ground for 5 – 10 seconds before the final death rattle.

The entire time this is happening, I can see my grandma shaking her head and yelling, “Raymond, stop it, the neighbors think you’re an idiot. Get off the ground.”

His response? “So what, they already think I’m an idiot.”

The best was the time my dad circled around the block and we got to get him a second time with a drive-by. He did the entire thing all over again, this time with grandma just throwing up her hands and walking inside… half-cursing, half-laughing.

My grandpa passed away in 2017 and I have so many wonderful memories of that man… but I LIVED for those shootouts.

Edit: Thanks to everyone for the comments and the awards! Poppy was the best and this is just one of many times he made us feel like the most important kids on the planet. And all it takes is time. He was more than willing to give us that!

  2. For anybody unfamiliar with British culture, showing a V to someone with the back of your hand facing them means fuck off.

Holding the V with your palm facing outwards is peace.

  3. All y’all with grandparents out there.

Know how lucky you are. Breathe it in. Suck it down.

I have young grand girls. Actually my great grand girls. (Because they’re great!).

I am still intellectually blown away how much I love these girls. “More” than I love my kids. Different that feels like more. Just seeing pictures of them elevates my mood, noticeable by those around me. Being with them? Fuggetaboutit.

Grandmas/pas love you all to death. Beyond reason. Beyond any dignity or pride or silliness or care of self.

Really enjoy it. And love them back. Not hard: just be there.

  4. I wish I had moments like these with my grandparents. I never got to experience baking cookies, showing me how to cook, etc. It’s all about alcohol and cigs for them. And 3 of them are dead. Yay! Your grandma seems very lovely.

  5. That is fantastic and awesome. I’m an EMT and I cannot tell you how may 70+ year old grandparents I’ve picked off the floor because they don’t have the strength to get back up. We go to elderly falls almost daily.

Please keep an eye out for hazards in her home that could lead to a slip and fall. A broken hip at that age is dramatically life changing and perhaps ending.

Edit: Many local fire departments have a Senior Home Safety inspection program and they’d be happy to come out and do a full review.
