This is awesome.
My grandparents, before they died, lived in a tiny town in Kansas called Coffeyville. Just a few hundred metres from their house was an old drive-in theatre. I saw The Mask there not long after it came out: you’d drive up and tune your radio to the station with the film’s audio. It was great.
A few years later my uncle, also gone now, lived directly across the road from the field with the screen. Last time I saw a film there was on the back of his pickup in a lawn chair watching Titanic for free. He also introduced me to weed, so I was baked.
They tore the outdoor cinema down a few years later to make room for the state’s largest elementary school as a way to bring more people into the dying town. It didn’t work. It’s a _massive,_ empty school.
I’m proud to be one of very few in my generation with memories of these long lost American past-times, especially having lived in England for 20 years where this story is still novelty to everyone I tell it to.
Is this by any chance in Red Deer? I feel like this a very Red Deer thing to do.
