  1. These mighty beasties are sometimes completely full of spiders. If you find one nesting in an alcove of your house, either use a stick to see if you have new spider neighbors, or just move out.

  2. I was working in the Mojave Desert and was clobbered by a tumbleweed nearly as tall as I am. The arms split open down the middle, and there’s all these tiny seeds inside. Somehow I got seeds in my boots and in my underwear from just this one encounter.

  3. Saw this once as a kid in South Dakota. There were tumbleweed drifts that were building up on pine tree rows that were almost as tall as the trees. Also watching them speed up when they crossed the road (no resistance from the grass) made them seem alive. One of the most bizarre things I’ve ever seen.

  4. That’s wild. Years back I had one hit my car driving back from Vegas during a storm, I’d never heard the sound they make on impact before but it did not sound good. Tumbleweeds are hard dried shrubbery demon spawn that can pop your tires and left a golf ball sized hole in my headlight.

  5. As a kid, I always thought they were made-up. Like it was a visual indication of the desert and wind in cartoons but bore no resemblance to reality. You should have seen how ecstatic I was when I saw one rolling down the road IRL, it was like spotting a unicorn

  6. In my area of rural NM we get strong prevailing winds that sorta push all the tumbleweeds up against the cattle fences or whatever, and you don’t see them rolling around all that much…. Except when a storm rolls up from the south, and changes wind direction. Then suddenly, **all of the tumbleweeds** are on the move, all at once.
